It is incorporated as The President and Fellows of Harvard College. Harvard University is a private one and it is situated in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is one of the members of the Ivy League, the most famous League of the association of the Universities.
Harvard University was founded in 1636, and from that time has won a great popularity with the students of the whole world. From all over the world the students are gathering in Harvard in order to receive the best education. Harvard University was organized by the colonial Massachusetts legislature and it is considered to be the oldest educational establishments in the United States of America.
The prior name of the Harvard University is “New College” or “the college at New Towne” and it received the name of Harvard College in the March 13, 1639. It was named after the John Harvard, a priest.
Being governed by Charles William Eliot, (1869-1909), Harvard College became an educational center – a research
University. The innovations were as follows:
• the right to select what subject to study
• Small classes;
• Entrance examinations;
From the times of Charles William Eliot, Harvard University has not undergone great changes.
