Harvard University is the oldest and, perhaps, the most impressive university in the United States. In 2005, the Times Higher Education Supplement plus the Academic Ranking of World Universities both ranked Harvard University primary between the universities of the world. As well, the US News and World Report rankings placed Harvard at the top of the list in a bind with Princeton. Furthermore, with a monetary gift of $25.5 billion in 2005, Harvard is measured the wealthiest university in the United States and on the planet.

Situated at Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard was established in 1663, included as “The President and Fellows of Harvard College.” It was called Harvard College in 1639 subsequent to John Harvard, a youthful clergyman and the institution’s first main donor. John Harvard, a creation of Emmanuel College in Cambridge, left in his will more than a few hundred pounds and some hundred books to the college, which created the basis of its college library compilation. It’s true that the first known official reference to Harvard as a “university” rather than a college was in 1780 in the Massachusetts Constitution.

Throughout his term as Harvard president from 1869 to 1909, Charles Park instituted numerous fundamental innovations that made the university into what was then known as the contemporary research institution of higher education. In the middle of his reforms were not obligatory courses, small classes and entry examinations. Because of its winning completion of these reforms, Harvard served as the model that influenced the American instructive structure very much, both at the college plus minor levels.
